SONG for Saturday

Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. -Matthew 10:29-31

In 1905, Civilla Martin and her husband became friends with a disabled couple whose joyful attitude in spite of great afflictions, brought much comfort and inspiration to all who knew them. When asked the secret of their bright hopefulness, the disabled lady's simple reply was "His eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me." Civilla was so touched by this response, she penned the words of 'His Eye Is on the Sparrow', then mailed the poem to Charles Gabriel, who supplied the music.

This has always been one of my favorite hymns. I can still picture the late Ethel Waters singing it with such joy and conviction during her many appearances with Billy Graham. She loved the song so much that she used its name as the title of her autobiography.

Click top left button on the PlayList, then click 'His Eye is On the Sparrow'. It's not Ethel Waters, but a beautiful rendition, nevertheless.

Why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come,
Why should my heart be lonely, and long for heaven and home,
When Jesus is my portion? My constant friend is He:
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

"Let not your heart be troubled," His tender word I hear,
And resting on His goodness, I lose my doubts and fears;
I hold Him close unto me, from care He sets me free;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

I sing because I'm happy,
I sing because I'm free,
For His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me.
